Wordy Wednesday: Swiss Chard

Today, I present to you Swiss Chard from our garden. Isn't she lovely?

Now that we've enjoyed its beauty, what do I DO with it? I know I can steam it or sauté it with a little oil and salt, but... I don't. Mainly, it goes into our super-fabulous, anti-oxidant rich morning juice blends (check out this surprisingly yummy combination). These juices are great, but we lose the fibre. There must be something else I can do with this pretty veggie that doesn't involve masticating it.

Anyone have any yummy swiss chard recipes they'd like to share?

  1. I'm so jealous of seeing everyone's garden pictures! My black thumb of death kills everything in sight. Yours looks great however!

  6. I love, love LOVE chard!! Smitten Kitchen has a yummy chard gratin with sweet potatoes. Alice Waters has some yummy chard recipes, also. I KNOW i used to make a fantastic Martha Stewart recipe with squash and chard- like a casserole, but I can't find it. I'll keep looking bc it was AMAZING. I also make many chard frittatas with parm or goat cheese. I've thrown it into my lasagna and made a FANTASTIC polenta layered recipe with chard also: that was also an Alice Waters recipe, from the Art of Simple Cooking.

(I'm a vegetarian, so I'm all about some leafy green superfoods.) ;)

  12. That's a beautiful vegetable. Love the colour of the stems! I don't think I've eaten Swiss Chard, unless they call it differently over here. I guess you could blend it instead of juicing it?

  16. She is very pretty. Is she neutral, being swiss and all? That would make her fit in a little bit of everything...

  17. Thanks ladies!

I could definitely blend it, Kiddothings - I've blended spinach before into smoothies.

I'll check out Allrecipes.com, Rach - have looked there before but not for some time.

  20. This is how my husband makes chard. I love it and my kids will eat it. Stir-fry in a little olive oil, add a splash of lemon juice and soy sauce, and a good handful of raisins. He covers for a little while to let the raisins get all plump and moist. That's it! My kids all approached it in a different way. One went only for the raisins, another the stems, and another the leafy part. But after a few times, they all eat everything just fine.
